Soft, bright and "circular". Also Monvania, one of the main companies in the district in the field of textile finishing, strongly focuses on sustainability and has decided to focus on the production of a viscose obtained from cellulose obtained from the so-called cotton Linter, a waste of cotton processing.
The use of what is in effect a rejection of the spinning process has significant environmental repercussions. «Trees are not cut and waste material is valued in the perspective of the circular economy» says Matteo Livio, CEO of Monvania. Specifically, the green strategy of the company has allowed not to sacrifice 182 tall plants in less than a year.
In terms of quality and cost, the use of cotton Linter is equal to the pulp obtained from woody raw material. On the contrary, in terms of performance, at least according to some of the main customers of the company in Como, the Linter gives a whiter and slightly more swollen thread, with a higher gloss and with particularly pleasant touch properties.
The pros are different, among other things, the processing requires less water consumption and fewer chemicals than wood pulp, but the Linter is still a little common material: Normally - explains Livio - viscose manufacturers choose wood pulp. There are excellent reforestation programs properly certified, but we decided to take a further step forward on the sustainability front that we consider not a business but a business route». A step consistent with the strategy pursued by the company in recent years that has resulted, for example, in investments in renewable energy (photovoltaic panels cover about 90% of the needs) or in investments in machines and plants to reduce consumption and that has been sanctioned by the ISO9001 certification.
The choice of Linter is not exclusive to the company from Como, but Monvania has decided with great determination on this material and is now the main producer, at least in Italy. «Seen the environmental importance - adds Livio - we hope that all the market is oriented in this direction».
Viscose is used both for furniture and furniture. The commitment to sustainability has been integrated, in the case of Monvania, with a commercial organization characterized by flexibility, in an attempt to meet a supply chain in which the watchword is to reduce as much as possible the time: «Our strength - says Matteo Malinverno, sales manager Italy - is based on the possibility of providing a ready wire service, within twenty-four hours, thanks to a wide availability of this product in stock».
The company from Como, fifty years of activity behind, has three production sites: Grandate (where there are also commercial offices), Edolo and Cividate Camuno. A hundred employees. A lot of history behind but also a look at the future. A Techvania startup focused on the development of technological fabrics is being launched.
